In-House Designer: Sian Roberts

Tell us a bit about yourself….

I am one of the designers here at moonpig, I work on a mixture of in-house designs and all your favourite brands including disney, boofle and more! When i'm not working I enjoy going on many holidays, cocktails and going on girly brunches!

How did you get into the creative/greeting card industry?

At uni I studied graphic design and in my final year we showcased our final major project at New Designers in London. A design show where industry people ‘scout’ the new talent. This is where I met the old creative director for the card team.

What has been the proudest moment of your career?

In 2018 I won the ‘best licensed greeting card design award’ at the The Licensing Awards, it was a great night in the ballroom of the Grosvenor hotel with everyone all dressed up!

At what point in your life did you realise illustration was the path for you?

As a child i was always a drawer, i remember entering little competitions at the library and winning quite a lot. I also would make handmade cards for family, which is now my job!

Do you have anyone or anything in mind when you're designing your cards?

I normally have a rough idea of the brief in my head but it mostly comes to life during the process of designing, choosing colours ect.

What is the best card you’ve ever been given?

The best cards ive been given was for my birthday this year, as we was in lockdown all my friends and family wrote long messages of our favourite memories together ect

Which is your favourite card you ever designed and why?

Oooh that's a hard question, atm it has to be jsp002 which is the first time drawing a person! I'm really happy with how it came out, and the range is fastly growing

Who or what is your biggest inspiration?

I find a lot of inspo via trends, what's going on and high street clothing!

What do you love most about your job/brand?

I love that we can experiment in-house and amazingly with licenses with styles and concepts quite openly, if we have a new idea we are encouraged to try it out. Also being able to be so so reactive with brands, and topical designs.

How did you land your job at Moonpig as a card designer?

After meeting the old creative director of the card team, he offered me an intern for a week , then I returned for another week. I then became a freelancer in house designer working on license design - from here several months later I was offered the role of a Designer doing both in-house and license design!
