Celebrating UK Black History Month

Supporting Our Artists

30 Sept 2020

Celebrating UK Black History Month 2020

As we stride into our 33rd UK Black History Month, to celebrate the importance of October we wanted to showcase some of our fantastic black and ethnic minority artists that champion diversity and inclusion in their designs.

At Moonpig, we’re super proud to help people turn something as simple as a piece of paper into a heartfelt gesture of love and care. Helping people be awesome at celebrating, and giving them the tools and confidence to do this is what gets us out of bed in the morning (only sometimes wishing we could snooze for just 5 more minutes). This also means we have a huge responsibility to ensure our cards represent our amazingly diverse customers all across the world. So, this year, more than ever, we want to put a loud speaker in front of a diverse range of voices and continue to work daily towards pushing inclusivity in all our cards.

So, grab yourself a cup of tea, coffee or something a bit more wild, and sit back and enjoy the beautiful designs from some of our fantastic artists.

KitsCH Noir

A name you might remember from our Meet the Artists series is Cherelle, the artist behind KitsCH Noir’s joyful and funny cards celebrating inclusivity and diversity. Not only are we lucky enough to have her amazing designs at Moonpig, but last month she spoke to us about the importance of inclusive art and the positive impact of seeing yourself truly represented.

“When I design cards, the person I have in mind is the younger me, I often think of my mind set at different stages of my life and the kind of cards I would have liked to be given. I always try to create cards that I wish existed when I was younger.”

“I also love watching customers’ reactions to the cards. I love being at an event or pop up and seeing the faces of women like me light up when they relate to the cards I create. There is so much negative imagery in the media nowadays and I’m glad that my brand is all about spreading love, joy and positivity about our culture.”

Nina Bombina

Another one of our incredible artists we’d love you to meet is Nina, the powerhouse behind the brilliantly bright and bold Nina Bombina. For an upcoming Meet the Artists feature, she chatted to us about what motivated her to start her brand, and the responsibility the greetings card industry has to champion a diverse range of voices and the work it still needs to do to be more inclusive.

“The recent Black Lives Matter activity in the media gave me food for thought, and it occurred to me that the greetings card industry is significantly lacking in the representation of black and brown people on card designs, so I made my own range.”

“I want my cards to appeal to everyone, from people of colour who want to see themselves represented on cards, to those who enjoy them purely for their design. We should normalise non-white people being represented on cards and for “diverse” cards to become standard rather than a specialisation.”
